Ninja-kun: Majou no Bouken  Jaleco (Tose)1985[i]Ninja-Kun: Majou no Bouken, Ninja Kid: Castle of Demons Adventure[/i]***Arcade port of the first game in the "Ninja-kun" series. You control a little ninja who has to defeat each enemy on screen. The game's formula is reminiscent of many other games of its time. You have very few stages packed with enemies. Once you have cleared all stages the game repeats itself just with more and deadlier enemies. Graphics are basic and the sound and music are annoying. It is a bit beyond me why this game started a successful series... labelimageminimize
Challenger  Hudson Soft1985Challenger consists of several scenes. The first one is a platform scene on a running train, then the game switches to an overworld view. Around the overworld you have to visit little caves (again in side-view) and ultimately have to find the princess and rescue her. The highlight of the game are the graphics. Especially the first scene on a train (featuring parallax scrolling) is impressive for a game from 1985. The gameplay though is far from being a real rival to either [game=#5128]Super Mario Bros.[/game] in the side-view scenes or [game=#9176]The Legend of Zelda[/game] in the overworld-scenes. labelimageminimize
Ninja Jajamaru-kun  Jaleco (Tose)1985[media=youtube]bKtwWO5N7is[/media]***While UPL brought the official sequel to Ninja-kun into the arcades, Jaleco made this spin-off sequel for the Famicom. The game basically stays true to the original game. Kill all enemies on screen with your shuriken throwing little ninja to make it to the next scene where more enemies await you. Inside a level you reach higher platforms by destroying brick walls by jumping headfirst against them *ouch*. Instead of the mainly up-and-down scrolling levels of the original Ninja-kun game, Ninja Jajamaru-kun scrolls horizontally. By the graphics and sound you can see that it is a rather early Famicom game. labelimageminimize
Ikki  Sunsoft (Tose)1985Run around, collecting all money bags scattered around the level and defend yourself against attacking ninjas. Only four rather short stages and a bonus round were left from the original eight arcade stages. The game is not free of some problems. Sometimes your enemies spawn in unfair spots and the fact that the game starts to scroll only when the player is already near the edge of the screen makes it even worse. On the other hand the game's start isn't very difficult. I was rather disappointed to come to the end of the fourth stage only after a few minutes in my first try. The fifth stage just repeats the first stage with more difficult enemies. The motivation to play on drops down drastically from there.***In this game you play rebel farmer who defends his section of land from marauding ninjas. This is based on Ikkō-ikki history. Presumably the ninjas were hired by the Samurai to wreak havoc? (I'm not that familiar with Japanese history). The farm land is a maze-like area that the player must navigate while the Ninjas can piratically fly. They Approach from the north with smaller numbers from the flanks. The player uses his boomerang to kill hundreds of them (maybe these are Ninja school dropouts). There are also Japanese coins to be collected in a Pac-Man like manner. The player does not remain centered in the screen and most scroll it by advancing dangerously close to the edge. Only the protagonist knows the boundaries of his land and stops on them (this information is not revealed to the player before reaching the edge).
This game was released only in Japan.

Jajamaru no Daibouken  Jaleco (Tose)1986The third game in the Ninja-Kun series from Jaleco. In contrast to the first two games you don't have to kill all enemies in each level to finish it. Here you have just to reach the exit door at the end of the level, which is scrolling from left to right. The game is a standard side-scrolling platform game borrowing many elements like destructible blocks with possible extra items from [game=#5128]Super Mario Bros.[/game]. The game is not bad, and a slight improvement over the other two Ninja games, but also not particularly groundbreaking or memorable. labelimageminimize
Adventure Island  Hudson Soft (Hudson Soft;Westone)1986[media=youtube]https://youtu.be/dwxJ7QO3hlk[/media]***
[37]***
[29]***
[27]***Adventure Island is the NES version of Sega's [game=#158027]Wonder Boy[/game], only with having the main character and music changed. It is a simple and fun platformer with colorful graphics and really good gameplay and controls. Some later levels are rather hard to beat, especially when you die and must start the section again without a weapon. There is a life bar that functions as some kind of time limit. You refill the bar by collecting food. At the day of its (Japanese) release this might be the best Famicom/NES platform game since [game=#5128]Super Mario Bros.[/game] made its appearance.***A mysterious tropical paradise known as Adventure Island is the setting for this side-scrolling action game. The evil Witch Doctor has kidnapped Tina, the true love of Master Higgins. To save her, you must safely guide Master Higgins through eight perilous stages - including dense forests and creepy caves - while defeating all of the enemies in your path. Each area is made up of four rounds filled with enemies determined to stop you in your tracks. In addition, as time passes, Master Higgins's vitality is automatically drained. To keep going, he must eat constantly by grabbing fruit, milk and whatever other goodies he can as he races toward his goal. Sometimes eggs containing miraculous items like axes to throw at enemies or honey that grants temporary invincibility will appear. Use items skillfully to help you clear the areas. At the end of each area you'll face the Witch Doctor, who you must defeat to advance. Go, Master Higgins, go!***A platform game that is simply an altered version of Sega's Wonder Boy. Help Master Higgins save his girlfriend!
The Japanese title means 'Master Takahashi's Adventure Island'. Takahashi is the original Japanese name for Higgins.

Nagagutsu o Haita Neko: Sekai Isshuu 80 Nichi Daibouken  Toei (Shouei System)1986This game is based on an old anime movie and obviously rooted in the novel "Around the World in Eighty Days" by Jules Verne. It is a platform/shooter mix, each level representing a different country/part of the world. In nearly each level you are in a different vehicle, ranging from boats and cars to balloons and even a level where you are controlling a submarine. However this diversity is already the most interesting part. The rest is really average. Shoot enemies here, jump over pits there. It is playable but nothing special. labelimageminimize
King Kong 2: Ikari no Megaton Punch  Konami1986This game is based on the 1986 movie "King Kong Lives", which was also known as "King Kong 2" in Japan. Your goal is to rescue a lovely giant pink female gorilla at the end of nine levels. First you have to find eight keys throughout the levels, each guarded by a boss monster. The game plays similar to the overworld of [game=#9176]The Legend of Zelda[/game] or [game=#156357]Nazo no Murasame-Joe[/game], but lacks any RPG or adventure elements. Throughout the levels you can destroy many ground objects in the hopes to find extra items or hidden doors. I doubt however that the game's content has much to do with the movie. So many strange surroundings Kong has do wander through with even stranger enemies. "King Kong 2" is one of the first 2Mbit cartridge games and Konami did a good job with the graphics and music once again. The game also plays well enough.***The subtitle means 'Megaton Punch of Anger'.

Layla  dB-SOFT1986[media=youtube]Lyk66JUjZVA[/media]***Layla is an early Run and Gun game for the Famicom. Not nearly as impressive as [game=#7679]Contra[/game], but it has quite a lot of weapons for its time and is moderately playable. The game features eight levels each of them taking place inside an asteroid, first in a cavern system, then in the fortress itself. The game's box describes it as a maze action game. And a maze it really is, at least in the fortress sections. Many floors hideously connected with lots of elevators, ruthless monsters and not much room to maneuver. It is one of those games that makes you realize how much more difficult games were back in 1986. Releasing action games like this doesn't make me wonder why hint books were so popular even for this game type early on in Japan. labelimageminimize
Seikima II: Akuma no Gyakushuu  Sony (ISCO)1986This game is based on the Japanese heavy metal/rock band "Seikima-II" and is not as I first thought a sequel to another game. You are out to rescue your fellow band members in four zones which are divided into eight scrolling "rooms" each. In each room you have to collect all items so the exit opens. Your life bar goes down continuously but can be refreshed by finding or buying potions from shops. You can also upgrade your weapons and buy music instruments which are needed to successfully finish the game. Each of the four zones has its own graphical theme and music. After rescuing the complete band you must face the endboss Zeus. The game is rather poor, with very strange and not very well working controls and only average graphics and sound. labelimageminimize
Hi no Tori: Gaou no Bouken  Konami1987"Hi no Tori" is a well made Konami platform game based on a manga series by Osamu Tezuka (the creator of Astroboy). Killed enemies leave blocks behind which you can collect and then use anywhere else to reach otherwise unreachable places. Graphics and music are well done for an early Famicom game from 1987 and the controls are good as well. Sadly Konami placed a few very hard to find secret doors throughout the game which in the end must be found to warp to other places/time zones of the game. I don't like it to be forced to look into a walkthrough for an otherwise very simple and straightforward game. labelimageminimize
Labyrinth: Maou no Meikyuu  Tokuma Shoten;Activision (Atlus)1987Activision did plan to publish this game in the USA. But it seems nothing became of this project. Perhaps there is a prototype in existence. Regardless, anyone dedicated enough to track down a prototype of this game may as well buy the Japanese version to play (English translation patch is available).

Once again a Japanese only release of a game based on a North American movie.***Labyrinth is a game based on Jim Henson's Labrinth movie from 1986. The Famicom version is a totally different game from the Lucasfilm Games/Activision adventure game for home computers. Your goal is to find 12 parts of a key to rescue your little brother from the Goblin king. And true to its name the levels are complicated mazes, complete with secret warps and so on. Having a walkthrough and maps at hand really helps for this game. The game is unspectacular but playable and implemented a few interesting ideas, like a level where the forest trees change location or another level where the directional controls are changing randomly. Collected coins and treasure can be spend to upgrade offensive and defensive capabilities as well as buying more time.***Teenager (jail bait) Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) refuses to grow up and during a childish fit, accidentally gives her little brother to the The Goblin King (David Bowie). Needless to say she wants him back (so she won't get in trouble). The Goblin King agrees she can be let out of the deal and rescue her little brother if she can navigate his labyrinth before his clock, with 13 hours instead of 12, runs out. The biggest obstacles are presented by Sarah's refusal to grow up. She insists on collecting junk like stuffed animals, costume jewelery, books for little girls and other such things that adults don't need. Furthermore, the labyrinth is unfair and the Goblin King cheats, often pushing his clock forward. This time limit and unfairness of the movie is included in this game. Us Americans are too dumb and lazy to play an unfair game, so it was never published outside of Japan.

Pocket Zaurus: Juu Ouken no Nazo  Bandai (Tose)1987In "Pocket Zaurus" you are a boy who gets transformed into a dinosaur and has to jump and run his way through several levels in different time zones to rescue a female. "Pocket Zaurus" is a standard platform game with ok graphics and varied levels for a 1987 game. As far is I know it was the second 2 Mbit cartridge for the Famicom ever released ([game=#155964]Ganbare Goemon: Karakuri Douchuu[/game] being the first one). The game plays well enough, but there is nothing really outstanding or memorable about it. labelimageminimize
City Adventure Touch: Mystery of Triangle  Toho (Compile)1987A game based on the highschool/sports manga and anime series "Touch". Your goal is to rescue ten cats which are hidden somewhere in a huge city and its surroundings. You are controlling two male characters at the same time (another female character is constantly following you around). That makes controlling the characters very complicated. You have to buy items from time to time to open up new part of the game world or to beat some bosses. The game is not very playable. Worst thing is the very limited inventory space. In order to free some space you have to drop several items from time to time. But this can only be done in certain houses! Also, shuffling through the inventory items is bothersome. The city is a huge maze with many streets, a forest, beach etc. Its hard to find your way around without a map and walkthrough. Compile should have kept with making great shoot'em ups instead of doing such a below average Action-Adventure game. labelimageminimize
Rygar  Tecmo1987
[52]***
[37]***
[27]***The PAL versions user 10-bits of memory each to store the attack and defense points where as the NTSC versions uses 12-bits. This means the maximum of 4000 points is obtainable for NTSC version but the PAL versions cap the player at 1023 points. The latter part of the game and especially the final boss are extremely challenging to beat with these caps.***A good early NES game. Not a direct port of the arcade Rygar game, but more something of a re-imagination. Tecmo put a few Action-Adventure elements into the game. Half of it is played in side-view perspective, the other half in a top-down view. The game is playable and the graphics and music have enough variety.***When all the other platforms attempted to convert arcade Rygar, the NES took a different approach. This one isn't like the arcade at all so it deserves a section of its own. It keeps the same Rygar character, the weapon and a few of the monsters but the rest has been redone with a kind of RPG element. At first I didn't like it but then I realized that it was better this than another mess.
The gameplay is more like [game=Black Tiger]Black Tiger[/game] in that it's a platformer but the levels are up/down scrolling too as well as left/right and you can also find hermits who are willing to help you out (similar to the shopkeepers). The various areas of the land are linked up by a stage with a top down view (pictured above right). The game is energy based and it also hides various special objects which help you such as a crossbow and grappling hook. And no extra lives, when you die, your dead.

Youkai Club  Jaleco1987This game instantly reminded me of the first [game=#7647]Castlevania[/game] game. "Youkai Club" is a mostly linear game. Some of the levels/rooms are side-scrolling and others are vertically scrolling. You kill enemies with your throwing knives/daggers. You can get experience from killing enemies and collecting red balls they leave behind or by finding special book items. With higher experience you upgrade you firepower. The graphics have enough variety most of the time and the music is decent. However the game also has strange jump controls that I didn't like. Many enemies are too hard to kill, especially at the beginning. The difficulty level is quite high. In the end it is what you might call an average game. Players who like Castlevania-style games might want to give it a try. labelimageminimize
Getsufuu Maden  Konami1987"Getsufuu Maden" plays like a mix of [game=#7949]Zelda II The Adventure of Link[/game] and [game=#7647]Castlevania[/game]. And as a bonus to the overworld map and side-scrolling action there are even three huge dungeons which you must explore in third-person perspective. The game is of high quality with lots of (short) levels, shops and interesting boss battles. Some repetitive parts can not be avoided however. There is lots of backtracking through already played levels. Graphics and music are good Konami standard, which means a step better than most other companies at that time. BTW: The box art is a special lenticular print (changing its image depending on which angle you look at it), so my box scan looks rather strange.***[media=youtube]5VuU2rvPmGI[/media] labelimageminimize
Batsu & Terii Makyou no Tetsujin Rasu  Use1987Batsu & Terry is based on an 80's baseball-themed manga series. You control either a baseball throwing guy or a baseball bat swinging guy. The game doesn't offer much fun. The levels are full of re-occuring elements and mostly just boring. Most enemies you should just avoid instead of killing them. And the graphics and sound are by far not good enough to draw some positive attention to the game. I mean I have played much worse games on the Famicom/NES, but in the end "Batsu & Terry" struggles to be even a mediocre game. labelimageminimize

[33]***
[1]***The first game in Rare's "Wizards & Warriors" series, and the only one which made it to Japan as well. Technically well done with decent controls. The story is from the typical "heroic knight saves the princess from an evil wizard" type. In order to finish a level you have to collect a certain amount of gems. You also have to collect colored keys to open corresponding doors and chests. At the end of a level a boss fight awaits the hero. The levels are varied enough to have kept me interested and everything looks interesting. All in all not the super best game ever, but quite enjoyable.***

Konami Wai Wai World  Konami1988
[30]***From time to time I get surprised by games, something that Konami Wai Wai World achieves. I did not expect a strange crossover platform/action title starring a dozen or so of Konami's heroes. The main protagonists are Konami-Man and Konami-Girl who try to rescue kidnapped Konami heroes from their respective levels. And there you have them all. Castlevania, The Goonies, Getsu Fuumaden, Goemon and even a classic vertical scrolling shooting level very similar to Twinbee and Life Force. Once you rescue one of the other Konami heroes you can switch to them whenever you want and use their special abilities which are sometimes needed in order to rescue the next hero. Otherwise the six starting levels can be finished in any order you want. Graphics are fine with lots of different stages and enemies and the music resembles the classic tunes of the other games which is a good idea. The bad part of the game is the gameplay itself, which is only slightly above average with some very difficult moments. Walking down stairs, and hitting enemies proved to be more annoying than I hoped.

Sukeban Deka III  Toei (Shouei System)1988"Sukeban Deka III" is based on the third Sukeban Deka highschool live-action TV show and manga. The gameplay is not related to Sega's [url=http://www.uvlist.net/game-154950-Sukeban+Deka+II+Shoujo+Tekkamen+Densetsu]Sukeban Deka II[/url]. It is an action game with rudimentary RPG elements in that you get xp for killing enemies and raising in levels gives you better attack and defense power as well as access to magical abilities. The areas of the game are either presented from a top-down view or side view. I didn't find the game enjoyable. Mostly due to the very repetitive levels, sub-average graphics and rather bad controls. labelimageminimize
Kamen no Ninja: Akakage  Toei (Shouei System)1988"Kamen no Ninja: Akakage" is a plaform-action game based on a Japanese tv and anime series. The hero has to make its way from left to right by jumping and running and killing (either by sword or ranged weapons) enemies, with a boss fight waiting for him at the end of the level. The game is not too bad compared with earlier games based on Toei anime series but there is also nothing really special. Graphics and music are OK. The levels are varied enough to a certain degree. But in the end I am sure I will have forgotten about this game in record time. labelimageminimize
Ninja-Kun: Ashura no Shou  UPL1988"Ninja-Kun: Ashura no Shou" is the sequel to [url=http://www.uvlist.net/game-167992-Ninja+Kun+Majou+no+Bouken]Ninja-Kun: Majou no Bouken[/url]. It's bigger (31 levels!), and more varied than its predecessor. In some levels you have just reach the exit, other levels require you to kill all enemies. There are underwater swimming passages, some levels go mostly up, others go from left to right. But it's still not really good, because the game is hard. Really hard. Unfair hard. You know the typical climbing up a wall and with bad luck an enemy sitting at the edge which you impossibly can avoid? This game includes lots of those scenes. And the controls are not the best. Wall jumping, despite being necessary in later levels is hard to put off for example. One of those games that gave me lots of trouble finishing despite an endless lives cheat and save states.***Was planned to be published in North America as [i]Ninja Taro[/i] by American Sammy. labelimageminimize

That's double trouble! But the NOID's got plenty of ammo -- supernatural powers, incredible inventions, and a whiz-bang yo-yo. He just needs a pizza every now and then to keep him going!

Dragon's Lair  Sony Imagesoft;Elite;Epic Sony Records (MotiveTime)1990The NES version came first and the European and Japanese releases came later. There is uncompiled assembly code in the ROM. It doesn't do anything, it is just recorded in the unused space in the ROM. Accidentally included to be sure. The source code reveals that a PDS development system was used (software and peripheral for x86 MS-DOS). European and Japanese releases are significantly different and use an MMC3 chip and character ROM rather than UNROM which used a RAM chip that was populated by code in the program ROM. The MMC3 version runs much, much faster.***
[70]***From deep within Mordroc's castle, a foul stench rose up to mix with the cold, damp midnight air; the telltale sign of the evil wizard's pet fire-breathing dragon, Singe; the reeking breath of the beast that guarded the Princess Daphne in the dark and deadly caves far below the surface. Dirk the Daring walked steadily toward the castle gate. He felt no fear. Fear was for cowards, not the most courageous knight in the land. No other would dare enter this perilous castle where Mordroc had imprisoned the helpless princess. But then, no other could match Dirk's unrelenting love for the beautiful Princess Daphne. There was no other possible course of action. Now was the time for heroes. Now was the time to enter the Dragon's Lair!***
